In today's world, sound electronics exist on many levels - car stereos, ipods, home stereos, surround sound theatres, and commercial public address systems. All of these are a part of the same family and have many similarities such as amplifiers, tone controls (equalization), and speakers.
In my opinion, the most important thing to understand about operating today's equipment is signal flow. Signal flow is the path that sound takes as it travels through various controls and pieces of equipment from the conception of the sound to the final amplified result of that same sound. Signal flow is to sound systems as theory is to music. Once someone understands the journey sound takes and the equipment it uses to travel, running sound becomes an easy and not an ominous task.
