Often times, aspiring engineers focus primarily on the "gear" end of the recording process. The worst studios I've recorded in had to much gear and to little ear. Part of being a great engineer is possessing the ability to adapt in any working environment, regardless of the equipment, and be able to improve sound. That's the job.
