Here is a simple definition:
Music theory is the field of study that deals with the mechanics of music and how music works. It involves identifying patterns that govern composers' techniques. In a more general sense, music theory also often distills and analyzes the elements of music – rhythm, harmony (harmonic function), melody, structure, form, and texture. Broadly, theory may include any statement, belief, or conception of or about music. People who study these properties are known as music theorists.
To put it more simply than that. Music Theory is a logical way to explain music. We can use theory to better understand how chords and scales are formed.
A question that you might be having is..."Should I learn music theory first or how to play first?" This is a hard question to answer. It would be similar to ask..."Which comes first, the chicken or the egg?" You just can't give a good answer. Here's what I would advise though. If you dexterity and playing ability is limiting you...practice playing more. If your playing is up to speed and you feel like you're playing the same stuff over and over...learn some theory. Music Theory will give you more ideas and more things to play.
Here at Encore Music, we're going to be providing you with both Theory and Lessons to make you an all around better player. Stick around and find out how much you can learn!
