THE USEFUL MELODIC MINOR SCALE and TWO FAVORITE MODES
This is for a more “jazzy” sound. Key in wherever you’d normally use a dorian form from the major scale series (my other post on MODES), or the “BOX 1” pentatonic or blues scale. It sounds cool over chord extensions!
OK The melodic minor scale itself; Use: on min/maj chords
Ex/ Key of A (Numbers = fret)
This scale form works wherever you'd normally use a Dorian, or "Box 1" of the penta-blues!

6 7 9

And the 4th mode of the melodic minor scale, the Lydian Dominant or as it's sometimes called, the Lydian b7 (Jazzy/Bluesy...Ex/ Steely Dan and/or Larry Carlton used it alot...)
Staying in A "locked in the grid" ; on 7(#11) chords

Finally, the 7th Mode of the Melodic Minor scale, “Super Locrian”. We can use the real estate starting at the 16th fret (or 4th fret-) Use: on dominant chords with altered tensions
