GILMORE...SANTANA...BENSON...CLAPTON...
5/27/08. I *just* read "PLAY TASTY MINOR SOLOS (WITH THE DORIAN MODE)!" by Dave Kilminster. He did a *killer* job of laying out the modal form sequences.
So much is always in the key of 'G', making 'A' Dorian a hot place to learn anything (and then extrapolate the same knowledge into all the other keys). As I've mentioned before, ye old pentatonic Box 1 fits within the 'A Dorian' 3-notes/string form, so even the most drooling among slackers can grab this beautiful stuff and run with it if he applies himself to getting it all under his fingers!
Anyway, Kilminster breaks down the whole modal treadmill exactly as I prefer it (three notes per string) and THEN uses them to lay out all the SWEET intervals and sequences...
1.] 'A Dorian in 3rd's' on the G (3rd)& B (2nd) strings.
2.] 'A Dorian in 6th's' on the G (3rd)& E (1st) strings.
3.] 'A Dorian in 6th's' on the D (4th)& B (2nd) strings.
4.] 'A Dorian stacked in 4th's' on the D G B strings.
5.] 'A Dorian stacked in 4th's' on the D G B E strings.
I've always liked to run octaves in the basic sequences
(1-2--4, 1--3--5, 1-3--4, etc.), but this provides a roadmap for the 6ths' (soulful and Memphis R&B,...inc. country)...and more...
Anyway-- It's truly an excellent, well written article- pgs. 20-30 including "20 licks"...accomp. CD tracks #8-12.
